AMOR- Mozambican  Association of Recycling has been implementing a project called Environment and Citizenship in 10 secondary schools in the city of Beira, since last year and will cover 5 more secondary schools in Maputo, namely: Josina Machel, Polana, Eduardo Mondlane, Francisco Manyanga and Estrela Vermelha in coordination with the Department  of Education and Human Development of Maputo City with the support of AGIR (Action Program for Inclusive and Responsible Governance) through WE EFFECT.

A recycling infrastructure in each school named Ecopoint will be installed in the 5 schools covered, as collection points of recyclable material being a container for paper (cardboard, newspaper, magazines, boxes …), plastic (bottles, bags, Buckets, chairs …), the metal (cans …) and also a bin for ordinary Waste . The quality of the separation will be evaluated monthly (the % of the waste placed in the Ecopoint) and taken into account in the calculation of the Green Points. At the end of each quarter, schools will receive the amount corresponding to the accumulated Green Points.

The Environment and Citizenship Clubs and the school board will be responsible for the use of the money received quarterly, using participatory budgeting practice.

In addition to the ecopoints, Environment and Citizenship clubs will be created, composed of 30 students and 2 teachers. Of these, 15 are from the classes in the morning and the remaining 15 in the afternoon. Students may participate on a voluntary basis, or they will be selected by class teachers considering gender equality, with no age or class preferences.

The members of the Clubs will elect 3 representatives democratically, being President, Vice and Treasurer. Once a week, the CACs will meet at a time and room available  defined by the school board and the topics to be developed will be counted on the guidance of an AMOR technician and two teachers identified by the school. The themes to be developed monthly will be environmental and citizenship, both in terms of theoretical and practical content, with the right to different material according to the activities to be implemented. In addition to encouraging the remaining students and the school community to use the School Ecopoints, they will link the project with civil society, focusing on the Municipality, but also on the private sector to collect more recyclable material.
