As part of the implementation of the project “Strengthening the Dialogue between Civil Society and the Maputo City Council on Solid Waste Management”, financed by French Embassy, through AMIS (Association of Civil Society and Coalition of Actors) In the month of June, AMOR carried out the following activities:

 1. Communitarian fairs with recyclable items

AMOR supported community fairs, which took place between 07 and 12 June in the districts of Chamanculo C, Maxaquene B and Hulene A. These fairs were held with the aim ofpresenting the new services that the associations come performing on the reuse and recycling of waste, as well as sensitize the residents living in the neighborhoods where they operate on the 3rs – reduce, reuse and recycle.

The following materials were displayed at the tables: handicraft items: decorated PET and glass bottles, paper baskets, paper holders, decorated boxes, paper vases, poufs made from the reuse of PET bottles and cardboard boxes; handmade soap: made from the recycling of used cooking oil; and ecological charcoal: briquettes made from coal dust and paper.

2. Cleaning Days in 3 Neighborhoods of Maputo

Together with the associations ASSCODECHA, KUTENGA and MAKTEL BACISSA, AMOR organized three cleaning days that covered the neighborhoods in which these associations operate. There were 97 local residents including the block heads and members of the associations involved in cleaning up areas deemed critical by the amount of garbage deposited improperly.

– In the neighborhood of Hulene A, it was possible to collect 30 sacks of raffia / 50 kg of common waste, 1 sack of raffia / 50 kg of PET bottles and 3 sacks of raffia / 50 kg of bottles and broken glass.

– In the neighborhood of Maxaquene B, 39 sacks of raffia / 50 kg of common waste were collected, and in addition to cleaning, a lecture was held to raise awareness among local residents about good solid waste management practices.

– In the district of Chamanculo C, the cleaning was carried out in park of the neighborhood, near the cemetery of Lhanguene. Fifteen bags / 50kg of common garbage, 3 bags / 50kg of different plastic and 2 bags / 50kg of garradas and broken glass were collected in the place.
